Learning the reality of the industry, and actually understanding the work that goes into creating a successful career - it’s not just plain luck. Looking from the outside a lot of people do not understand what is behind an artist or a band, and it’s just huge. I think it was a good wake up call, and definitely helped me in goal setting and planning ahead. Since doing the course, I have personally gone for a grant which was successful, I released a debut EP, directed music videos, I’ve got my accounting sorted, I’ve booked and embarked on national, WA tours and festivals and more. I was incredibly inspired around creating an artistic social media presence and looking at music and branding more visually. The whole Sound States experience was inspiring as both a manager and an artist

Sound States returns in 2026, continuing its mission to empower the next generation of Western Australian artists and artist managers with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to take control of their careers.

Presented by 360 Artist Logistics, the three-day mentorship program is open to early-career artists and managers at all stages of their journey. For the first time, applications are now open to artists regardless of whether they are self-managed or already working with a manager, expanding access to those ready to deepen their understanding of the music industry and their place within it.

Taking place from Monday 29 June to Wednesday 1 July 2026 at the State Library of Western Australia, Sound States delivers an immersive, hands-on experience designed to challenge traditional industry narratives and break down the myth of gatekeepers.

Across three full days, participants will engage directly with a curated lineup of mentors who have built successful, independent careers from the ground up. Through a mix of workshops, panel discussions, and open conversations, attendees will gain real-world insights into DIY career development, audience building, and sustainable pathways within the music industry.

From artist managers and self-managed artists to publicists, booking agents, and industry specialists, Sound States offers a rare opportunity to learn from professionals who have forged their own paths, sharing both their successes and the realities behind them.

The program is free for successful applicants, with places available for both metro and regional participants. Travel, accommodation, and ground transport will be provided for eligible regional attendees.

Eligibility Criteria - to apply, you must:

  • Be a Western Australian resident

  • Be currently active in the music industry

Regional applicants (living more than 75km from Perth) are eligible for travel and accommodation support.

My biggest takeaway from Sound States was the feeling that there is a place for everybody in the music business. Being part of Sound States instilled a renewed confidence that I was on the right track and that we are all in the same boat, dealing with the same challenges.
— Donna Albertini, Manager of Yomi Ship
I loved connecting with other emerging artist managers who face the same challenges that I do, to share ideas and concepts, then to walk away from Sound States with a new network of people that you can bounce off and draw inspiration from
